New Driver Tips For Car Maintenance

Automotive Blog

While some mechanical issues with your car may be unavoidable, there are some that you can often prevent simply by taking proper care of your car. If you are a new driver and a first time car owner then it can be hard to keep track of everything you should be doing as a new driver. The tips here are going to help you to cut down on some of the more common mechanical issues that can come with simple neglect.

Check your fluids often

You want to check your fluids a lot in the beginning. The reason for doing this more often is so you can get to know the car better and this will make it easier for you to spot trouble quickly so you can get the car in at the first sign of problems. When you are checking the fluids, you want to pay close attention to the consistency, color and overall look of each fluid, along with where it lines up with regards to the low and full lines. If you notice the fluids look different than normal, it's a good idea to have the car looked at. Sometimes a change in the appearance of such things as the motor oil can mean there are mechanical problems that need attention.

Pay attention to the tires

Make it a habit to look at your tires regularly. Make sure they still have a good amount of tread on them and they aren't wearing along the insides of the tires. This can be hard to check without bending down and getting close. Also, take the car in routinely to have your tires rotated so they wear evenly. Make sure you check the air regularly and add more to the tires if they start to get low. This will help them stay in good shape longer and make the car handle better.

Take care of your battery

Make sure you check and refill the cells of your battery if you live in a very hot climate. Also, make sure you park your car in the garage if you live in a very cold climate. These things will help you to keep your battery longer. If you have corrosion on the posts, mix a couple teaspoons of baking soda in a couple cups of water and pour it on the corrosion, scrub a bit with a nylon brush if necessary and rinse the posts.

Following these tips will be a good start when it comes to taking care of your car. As a new driver, you should always be listening and open to learning more about routine car maintenance, so you can be sure you are treating your car correctly. Always take your car to a car repair shop, such as Southside Auto Repair, if you have reasons for concern.
